How Many Miles is Too Many for a Ford F-150?

Published on Sep 29, 2024 by McFarland Ford Creative Team

Whether you are already the proud owner of your very own Ford F-150 or are looking to become one, it’s important to know when you should be getting crucial services done for your vehicle. In addition to that, it’s important to know when you might need some of the most common repairs, so that you can make sure to budget for them if and when they happen. For that reason, we thought we’d help by showing you at which mileage you might end up needing these different services and repairs. While there’s no such thing as too many miles, we can at least tell you at how many you’ll need these different things done.

Regularly Scheduled Maintenance

Before diving into some of the more common repairs, we thought we should first highlight the regularly scheduled maintenance that you’ll need to stay on top of throughout the life of your vehicle. You’re probably already well aware of the fact that you’ll need regular oil and filter changes, roughly every 5,000 miles. You’ll also want to rotate your tires on that same service schedule. Some other milestones, pun intended, include but are not limited to:

  • Every 30,000 miles
    • Replace air filter
    • Replace cabin air filter
    • Replace fuel filter
    • Service transmission fluid
    • Lubricate ball joints
  • Every 60,000 miles
    • Lubricate ball joints
    • Clean, repack wheel bearing
  • At 100,000 miles
    • Flush cooling system
    • Replace spark plugs
    • Replace differential oil
    • Replace positive crankcase ventilation valve
  • At 150,000 miles
    • Replace serpentine/drive belt

Most Common Repairs

Now that we’ve covered some of the most common regular maintenance services that you’ll need to have done throughout the life of your vehicle, it’s time to move onto our list of the most common repairs you’ll likely have to watch out for in your Ford F-150. While a few of these aren’t particularly expensive, some of them are more so and one in particular is quite pricey.

  • Mass Airflow Sensor replacement
    • This can run anywhere from $200 to $320 and will likely happen somewhere between 100,000 and 125,000 miles.
  • Oil Pump replacement
    • Coming in at over $1,000, this is certainly the priciest repair on our list. The good news is, a lot of Ford F-150 trucks never need the oil pump to get replaced, so as long as you take good care of your truck and stay on top of your oil changes, you might never have to worry about it.
  • Window Regulator Motor replacement
    • This is another part that doesn’t wear out that often, but if and when it does occur it won’t be until after 100,000 miles.
  • Spark Plug Wire replacement
    • If your spark plug wires need to be replaced, it will most likely happen when you need to replace your spark plugs at the 100,000-mile service appointment.
  • Automatic Trans Shift Cable replacement
    • Symptoms of this problem can show well before the problem needs to be addressed, but the ultimate failure of the part typically happens between 125,000 to 175,000 miles.
  • Trans Oil Cooler Line replacement
    • This is another part that doesn’t typically fail until you get up into very high mileage, so you shouldn’t have to worry about it until you pass 100,000 miles.

Hopefully, all of this information has helped you figure out how many miles is too many for the Ford F-150.
